The Numbers Tell Two Different Stories By the end of June 2026, Nigeria's Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) had recorded 922 confirmed cases and 221 deaths, up from 790 cases and 148 deaths over the same period in 2025. Why the Fatality Rate Keeps Climbing Officials point to a consistent set of factors: delayed hospital visits, poor health seeking behaviour in affected communities, and health facilities under sustained pressure managing severe cases. Healthcare worker infections have escalated sharply through the season: 15 cases by Epidemiological Week 7, rising to 28 by Week 8, and 38 by Week 10 in early March. A joint NCDC and Nigerian Medical Association advisory, signed by Idris, identified the core drivers as low clinical suspicion in general wards rather than dedicated Lassa units, inconsistent PPE supply, improper use of available protective gear, and a false assumption among staff that infection risk was confined to designated isolation wards. Field investigations found infections occurring in general outpatient departments and maternity wards, settings where no one expected to encounter the virus. "Strict adherence to IPC practices, early detection, and coordinated state level action will save lives and prevent further transmission," Idris said in the advisory. The Financing Problem Underneath Nigeria's health budget has consistently fallen far short of the 15% target African governments committed to under the 2001 Abuja Declaration. The sector received just 4.3% of the national budget in 2026 and 4.5% in 2025. Nigeria's Coordinating Minister of Health, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, disclosed that the ministry received only ₦36 million out of a ₦218 billion capital allocation earmarked for health in the 2025 budget, leaving it unable to implement planned capital projects.
